  This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the Saw Stop table saws and panel saw without supervision.

  Learn how to use the NoVA Labs SawStop table saws and panel saw. In this rowdy 3 hr class, you will learn to employ the table saw and panel saw for the most frequently needed operations: precision cross-cutting and ripping. You'll also learn the true meaning of the phrases "finger-tight", and "about right". You'll learn about "kickback" and how to avoid it.

  Class is required for everyone, regardless of experience level. Sufficiently motivated students who show competence will be signed off immediately at the conclusion of class.

  This class covers the basics of blacksmithing with a simple, fun project. Makers learn essential skills like hammer control, tapering, bending and twisting as well as key safety items like how to avoid burning yourself, branding your friends or hitting yourself with blunt objects. You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission. After you complete this class, you can join us at the "supervised practice sessions" and work on anything you can dream up, with help from experienced smiths.

  Due to the complexity and danger inherent in blacksmithing, we cannot offer truly “open” office hours. Instead, the blacksmith shop offers “practice sessions” for those that have taken the safety sign-off.

  Come with a project in mind that you saw on YouTube, have one of our experienced blacksmiths recommend a project based on your experience level, or simply come out and pick from one of the examples hanging on the walls; one or more of our smiths will be present to help you pick out tools and materials.

  You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

  There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

  • No more than 2 people per anvil
  • You must have taken BL_101.

  Roses, with their sweet fragrance and pleasing symmetry, have been a symbol of romance and passionate love for centuries. But they are also short-lived, wilting and shriveling up into sad balls of dispiriting, rotted plant matter before drying out and flaking away.

  Is this really a good symbol of your love? Shouldn’t your ardor be personified by something as sturdy as it is beautiful? Something that lasts a lifetime? Something hammered into shape by your dedicated affection and tempered in the furnace of your burning passion?

  You’re damned right it should be! Give your partner a steel rose! Better yet, come make a pair of them together!

  This is a couples blacksmithing class where you and your partner will assist each other to turn a set of pre-made sheet metal plates into an attractive steel rose with a hand-forged stem. Students will learn the basics of blacksmithing and use hammers & tongs with a variety of shaping tools to construct their steel rose.

  This class will also serve as a Safety Sign-Off for NL members for the blacksmithing equipment, equivalent to the BL: 101 class. Students who have already taken the safety sign-off may miss the first 15 minutes, though the price will remain the same.

  COST: $150 per couple (first registrant of the couple will pay $150 and their registered guest will pay $0)

  EQUIPMENT: It is highly encouraged that students bring a pair of leather work-gloves to assist in the chiseling process. Nova Labs can provide welding gloves if necessary… but they are stiff and kind of stinky; you’d be a lot happier supplying your own, honest! Safety glasses will be provided. The materials and blacksmithing equipment will be provided.

  SIGN OFF: Blacksmithing Safety (for members).

  In this project class, students will hand forge their own brute-du-forge Japanese Kiridashi. A Kiridashi is a Japanese hand-forged utility knife regularly used for woodworking, bamboo crafting, whittling, marking, deburring, pencil sharpening, paper cutting, leathercrafting, etc. Brute-du-forge refers to the finish being as forged, and outside a clean-up of the edge, the blade will have a forge finish.Perfect for the beginner, the amateur wood worker, and the pro, this class will focus on all aspects of the forging process, along with how to harden and temper your rough forged blank.

  Learn to make your own handmade cutting boards. These boards make beautiful finishing touches in any kitchen. Use them as a charcuterie board or buffet table accent. Learn the process and make many more either to give as gifts either in our shop or your home shop. Perfect for the chef or BBQ enthusiast in your life. We'll also show you how to maintain it in beautiful condition.

  You do NOT need any tool sign offs for this class. No experience is needed to take this class. We provide all the training, tools, and materials needed.

  We try to schedule one vendor or other speaker presentation for each meeting and then leave the rest for open discussion or work on your projects. Bring your robotics projects (in any state, even napkin sketches). We can do anything from learning where to start - to talking about robotics specifics.

  Learn to use to use the Nova Labs powder gun, spray booth, and oven. 

  Powder coating is a process whereby a dry powder is deposited on a surface using electrostatic attraction and then baked to a durable, chemical-and-UV-resistant, attractive finish. It is actually easier to apply than standard spray paint, and in many cases gives a better result. 

  Safety and Dress: The powder is nonreactive and will not stain clothing, but may get on skin and clothes. Dress appropriately. Breathing protection is recommended but not required.

  Make your own Little Furniture for a doll house, a Diorama, Fairy Garden or just for fun!

  During this class, attendees will assemble, glue and paint a set of small furniture. All the parts will be laser cut from thin plywood before the class. The participants will also get to use fabric and a sewing machine to manufacture small cushions or other accessories for the furniture. 

  The design process and how a laser works will be discussed. If time permits, makers will work on cardboard prototypes of their own invention. 

  Younger children are welcome in this class with an adult helper. Adult helpers should come prepared to help exclusively. Usually, it is not possible to help a young maker and make your own project in the same session.

  
  The price is per furniture set. Adults helping children but not building their own furniture do not need to pay.

  Want to learn how to do your own basic electrical repairs for your home? Replace and reattach light fixtures, outlets, or switches safely. We’ll go over basic tools and safety and how your home wiring works. There will be hands-on practice so you can learn how to replace or install an outlet, a switch, and a light.

  Tools and materials are provided but you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own tools.

  Prerequisite: none.

  Robin Renner has 35 years experience as a carpenter, a contractor, and as a construction director for housing nonprofits. She has worked with hundreds of volunteers teaching and leading construction projects, everything from basic repairs to full whole house construction.  She has taught over 40 training classes ranging from drywall skills and general construction, to electrical and plumbing repairs, to healthy housing and safety.

  This class teaches the basic techniques and safety practices needed to begin making your own tools and knives on the Nova Labs 2" x 72" belt grinder, and provides a signoff if you demonstrate a solid understanding of tool operation and safety practices during the class.

  Our 72 inch grinder has a 2 inch belt and is specifically designed for precision grinding tools and knives. It gives you a lot of freehand grinding surfaces that get into corners and curves of your piece. If you know a few simple techniques, it is safe, efficient, and a joy to use but there are some serious risks involved so a signoff is required to use the tool.

  Techniques demonstrated for working with stained glass to make a customized glass rose. Our stained glass artist will assist you in creating your own design and color combinations so you have two roses suitable as keepsakes or Mother's Day gifts.

  Take the class with your Mom or partner. This is an excellent choice for a couples or Mother's Day maker-experience class. For Mother's Day, combine it with brunch to make an excellent gift idea.

  Do you want to have the ability to sculpt a solid block of metal to tolerances of a human hair? This workhorse of milling, the Matsuura MC-510V CNC Mill, is fitted with modern CAD and CAM software, using Fusion 360.

  This class is the follow-on to the MW: Vertical Mill Sign Off class, and is designed to introduce the student to the advanced capabilities and features of the Bridgeport and vertical mills. We will cover the set-up of the mill, methods of securing parts, basic end mill bits, table operations, understanding the Digital Read Out (DRO), and the differences between the Bridgeport and the Enco Mill.
  
  After the class, students will receive material, parts, and a drawing of the class project: a machinist tool block with assorted sized of center drills and a 6" stainless scale to keep. Completion and instructor approval of the class project within the next 30 days is a prerequisite to being signed off on the Bridgeport and Vertical milling machines. 1:1 instructor assistance is available during the project completion period for any student requiring additional direction or assistance with mill operations.

  Nova Labs has a fleet of Phrozen Sonic 4K LCD-based SLA 3D Printers. SLA printing is much higher resolution than our FDM machines, and the LCD process is a good bit faster than laser SLA. These machines can be used to print jewelry or miniatures with a resolution of ~ 50 microns, but the prints do require a bit of post-processing before use. These machines are great for prints that are small but require more detail than the FDM machines can provide.

  This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the lathes without supervision.

  Woodturning is a fun, absorbing activity. Almost no one comes to the shop just to “putter around” with the table saw or the planer, but once you learn the basics of turning, you’ll want to putter around with the lathe. While this sign-off course is intended for those with no prior experience it is a prerequisite to use the lathe independently and this sign-off is required for the bowl-turning class. This course is NOT a project class, but focuses on the basic skills needed to turn. We will cover spindle-turning as well as learn how to safely use the lathe, how to take care of the tool within Nova Labs policies, and begin to develop proficiency with the roughing and spindle gouges, and the skew chisel. You won’t become an expert with one course, but I hope you will (re)discover that turning is fun and adds a new dimension to your portfolio of woodworking skills.

  A two-day class covering job setup, safety, and VCarvePro software. Tool test-out is included on Day 2. You must attend both sessions to get the sign-off.

  There is a safety and VCarvePro software lecture session. Following the classroom session, the group will move to the CNC LAB and proceed to get each student maker familiar and comfortable operating the control software and the Shop Sabre.

  The software that will be utilized during training and sign-off is VCarvePro. VCarvePro can be downloaded as a DEMO Version from the Vectric Website (www.vectric.com). The demo version of VCarvePro will not permit a maker to create the toolpaths. Creation of toolpaths is accomplished on the PC attached to the ShopSabre.

  Looking to step up your metalworking game? Then enter the art of Tungsten Inert Gas welding! This class is a comprehensive crash-course through the core concepts of TIG welding and the prerequisite sign-off class for independent use of our machine in the metalworking shop.

  Sign off: TIG Welder

  Safety Clothing: Wear natural fiber clothes, with long pants. Close-toed shoes are required, ideally made with natural materials. Tie back long hair and arrive within 15 minutes of start time.

  Prerequisite: With welding, sooner or later, you are going to need to cut or shape the metal. This is why we require Metal Shop Basic sign-off for all independent welders.

  If you take the welding sign off before the Basic sign-off class, we welcome members at Metal Shop Mondays where you can improve your skills under supervision. Both this sign-off and Metal Shop Basic sign-off are required to use the welder independently (without supervision).

  Due to the complexity and danger inherent in blacksmithing, we cannot offer truly “open” office hours. Instead, the blacksmith shop offers “practice sessions” for those that have taken the safety sign-off.

  Come with a project in mind that you saw on YouTube, have one of our experienced blacksmiths recommend a project based on your experience level, or simply come out and pick from one of the examples hanging on the walls; one or more of our smiths will be present to help you pick out tools and materials.

  You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

  There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

  Add to your basic electronics skills with sensors. Learn to add sensors and program your circuits to make them interactive, able to control devices, or sense the environment.   The surface grinder is a precision grinding tool designed to flatten steel material, and/or produce a finished surface on steel, Accuracy to .001 can be readily obtained on a steel surface. Nova-Labs Harig618 is a manually operated tool, not computer controlled, but can nonetheless achieve mirror like finishes, precise angles, and perfectly flat surfaces on steel stock. Unlike some machine tools a maker can achieve quality results with a short operational learning curve. Great for makers of all stripes.

  Come with a project in mind that you saw on YouTube, have one of our experienced blacksmiths recommend a project based on your experience level, or simply come out and pick from one of the examples hanging on the walls; one or more of our smiths will be present to help you pick out tools and materials.

  You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

  There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

  This informal / social meeting is also for those people with projects and questions, maybe you've gotten stuck or come to a decision point. Come out and get a fresh perspective.   When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. But what if you don’t have a hammer?

  Then all your problems look different – they all require unique solutions, and who has time for that? You need to make a hammer so you can simplify your life!

  
  

  In this class we will make a 2.5 pound (1.1kg) blacksmithing hammer using 4045 medium-carbon steel. Along the way, you’ll learn some metallurgy, a little history, and a lot of procedural information on how to use some Red Tools.

  On the first day, we will forge out the head of the hammer and learn how to use Nova Labs’ 16-ton pneumatic press to punch a hole through the stock. We will shape, drift, and heat-treat the head of the hammer.

  On the second day, we will learn how to grind and polish our hammer-heads, which sounds dirty. And it is; you shouldn’t wear nice clothes. But it’s dirty in a wholesome way. We’ll be using Nova Labs’ 2x72 Inch Belt Grinders and a die grinder to finish shaping our hammer.
  Students will be expected to come in on their own time during the week to shape their hammer on the grinder, and mount the head on a (provided) handle.

  This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the lathes without supervision.

  Woodturning is a fun, absorbing activity. Almost no one comes to the shop just to “putter around” with the table saw or the planer, but once you learn the basics of turning, you’ll want to putter around with the lathe. While this sign-off course is intended for those with no prior experience it is a prerequisite to use the lathe independently and this sign-off is required for the bowl-turning class. This course is NOT a project class, but focuses on the basic skills needed to turn. We will cover spindle-turning as well as learn how to safely use the lathe, how to take care of the tool within Nova Labs policies, and begin to develop proficiency with the roughing and spindle gouges, and the skew chisel. You won’t become an expert with one course, but I hope you will (re)discover that turning is fun and adds a new dimension to your portfolio of woodworking skills.

  Learn how to use the NoVA Labs SawStop table saws and panel saw. In this rowdy 3 hr class, you will learn to employ the table saw and panel saw for the most frequently needed operations: precision cross-cutting and ripping. You'll also learn the true meaning of the phrases "finger-tight", and "about right". You'll learn about "kickback" and how to avoid it.

  Class is required for everyone, regardless of experience level. Sufficiently motivated students who show competence will be signed off immediately at the conclusion of class.

  Discover the foundations of Metalsmithing by making your own stackable rings! You will learn how to measure, cut, file, anneal and texture your metal before shaping it into a ring. You will then learn to solder the seam, quench and pickle, and discuss finishing. We will be using ring sizing mandrels, texturing hammers, Dremel tools, learning about jeweler's saws and files, and most importantly, learning how to make solder run without melting the whole thing!

  Copper, brass and silver will be available, and you'll go home with your own custom-made rings! Keep them for yourself or they make great gifts.

  Small butane torches will be used for soldering.

  There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

  Important -- Please review and acknowledge the rules and conditions listed below:

  • No more than 2 people per anvil
  • You must have taken BL_101.
  • Required safety items: You must wear safety glasses (we have some to borrow if you need them), leather shoes, and 100% non-synthetic clothes (cotton, wool, leather). You WILL NOT be able to blacksmith if you are wearing synthetic clothing. We suggest you mark your personal gloves and glasses since they are frequently forgotten at the lab.

  Blacksmithing Policy: Minors under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult who must supervise and participate alongside the minor (both must register). The adult must have taken Blacksmithing 101. The adult is responsible for the safety of the minor and must be close enough to physically intervene in case of danger.

  Hands-on learning with real components, breadboard, and testing equipment, makes great connections for using the electronics tool bench, ours or yours.

  Students are introduced to the basic electronics concepts using TinkerCAD's amazing electronics simulator. Build and experiment with electronic circuits in a visually accurate, functional simulator that is designed for easy use. No components to buy, no soldering. With TinkerCAD you can learn to work with a variety of components, breadboards, test instruments, sensors and there are even Arduinos and displays you can program (not covered in the basic class).

  Note: The 4 classes in our basic electronics series (EL_P01, P02, P03, and P04) along with a successfully mentored project earns the Nova Labs Basic Electronics Microcertification.

  Prerequisites: None. *This is an adult class, but beginners of all ages are welcome.

  Before Class: Sign up for a free TinkerCAD before class.
  • TinkerCAD is a web based simulator, you do not have to download anything. You do have to make an account with login. After you are logged in, the circuits is below the 3D CAD.
  • Register for an account: Go to web page www.tinkercad.com
  • Log into TinkerCAD; it will help if you have also accessed TinkerCAD Circuits (below the “3D Designs” option) and looked at the interface.

  Come to the Nova Labs Juneteenth Barbeque and bring your friends and family for a fun-filled community day. Share red foods, dress snappy, and learn about African American traditions, inventors, and makers. This is outdoors in the fresh aire with lots of room.

  Volunteers will be there to provide activities for the whole family: 

  • Tie-dye t-shirts and bandanas, kids STEAM activities, and more
  • Plenty of seating but you can bring your lawn chair and relax

  Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. June 19th or Juneteenth is a time for family, friends, and community to celebrate freedom. Juneteenth is worthy of recognition for some important historical reasons.  First the Emancipation proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, 1863.  Second, Robert E. Lee did not surrender the Confederate Army until April 9th, 1865. Finally, The enslaved people in Texas, some 250,000 men, women, and children did not learn about their date with freedom until General Morton Granger and his 2,000 union soldiers arrived in Texas to inform them on June 19th, 1865.

  Just like our makerspace, Juneteenth celebrations almost always focus on education and self-improvement. But importantly, the Nova Labs Juneteenth tradition is an opportunity to bring our community together, to reunite, and to plan bright futures together in celebration--over some great barbeque.

  The following is derived from Juneteenth.com:

  Barbeque is a traditional focus of Juneteenth celebrations, formerly enslaved people celebrated by eating meats such as lamb, beef, and pork each of which was rarely available to enslaved people. Consuming red foods is another recognized tradition of Juneteenth.  Strawberry soda, “Red Drink”, beet salad, and red velvet cake are all examples of foods which are welcome and common at Juneteenth celebrations. “The crimson is a symbol of ingenuity and resilience in bondage,” according to The New York Times.  The red is significant as some West African traditions associate the color red with strength. Other traditions include wearing ornate or fancy clothing in celebration of Juneteenth. Formerly enslaved people were not allowed to wear clothing of any consequence, dressing with sophistication is an  exercise in freedom on Juneteenth.

  Embark on a dynamic journey into the world of 3D design. You'll learn hands-on, step-by-step techniques to create digital 3D models, which then can be used to manufacture objects using a 3D printer or other CNC machines. Onshape is free and web-based software so you will be able to continue learning wherever you choose. Whether you're a beginner or you have some experience and want to expand your skills, this course provides ample opportunities for growth. You'll learn to design in three dimensions and modify CAD files to craft your own unique creations.

  The class will include an introduction to the Prusa Slicer, so every participant will be able to prepare a CAD for 3D printing. Discover the art of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and slicing techniques, along with a trove of tips and tricks to bring your ideas to life.
